Pol Castells, the young driver, employed and sponsored by Metalcaucho, encountered technical problems that prevented him from finishing the Osona rally
Metalcaucho, european leading supplier of aftermarket spare parts in rubber and metal for the automotive sector, is next to Pol Castells in bad and good situations. The Peugeot 206 XS Motor 1.6 driven by the young driver, who combines his position as a technician in the Quality Department of Metalcaucho with his passion for racing, presented several mechanical problems and forced him to retire early.
After a very good first race of this Catalan Promotion Championship (CCP), in May at the Ciutat de Valls Rally, Pol Castells appeared excited and prepared to give everything, even aspiring to a victory that narrowly escaped him in the first date. However, from the beginning in this Osona Rally that was held on July 3 in the vicinity of Vic (Barcelona), things went wrong. After a first loop in which the choice of tires was not correct, they went on to a second loop which came out with new wheels and a good race pace. But, the accelerator pedal stopped working, forcing them to stop, losing more than 2 minutes and all options for victory.
Despite the difficulties, they rejoined the race and made up time for their rivals, finishing third in that section. After the midday break, they made some adjustments to the car, but they soon realized that the car was not working well. The gear said enough and they were forced to abandon.
At the end of the race, Pol Castells commented that “this is a rally to forget and learn. That is how cruel the races are, we had pace, desire and motivation to do a good job and try to make a result that gave us the confidence to fight for the title. After this abandonment the championship has become practically impossible for us. We have to sit down and try to get the most positive side to continue working and fight until the end of the year. Now comes the summer break, so it is the ideal time to make decisions for our future”.
There are times when you learn more from a defeat than from two victories, and this is possibly one of those times when you have to analyze your mistakes in order to continue growing in many races. The young Metalcaucho employee is sure that „we will continue to give the best of ourselves, we are touched but not sunk“.
